The latest presentation I did of my thesis research, on Monday 9th of February.
The slides are in Dutch.
Basically, I have formulated a new research question:
"How are contradictions and conflicts depicted in an abstract way and what does the artist want to tell us with those?"
From the big question, two smaller questions are derived:
1. How does the artist communicate in/ with society?
2. What looks the conflict like?
In the research, there is a main focus on communication, in general and through art. The role of the contemporary artist (not per se making contemporary art) is questioned and revisited. Along with communication, the theme of conflict is present, and specifically the conflict depicted in art in an abstract way will be researched.
By using two current events, the events of Charlie Hebdo and the work of controversial artist David Cerny (probably 'Entropa'), I want to see how far the communication discourse of the artist(s) went or were allowed to go. Miscommunication & provocation can be spotted, and to what extent has this caused an effect in society. How we can cope with all contradictions and conflicts in life, is something an artist can answer and visualize for us.
